Layer Day 2014

Management of ventilation system plays an utmost important role in respiratory disease control in different type of housing system.

On 24 April 2014, Ceva Animal Health Malaysia and Agritech Enterprise had organized an annual major event – Layer Day 2014 at Equatorial Hotel, Melaka with participant of more than 40 poultry enthusiasts from Peninsular Malaysia.

Ventilation is one of the key factors to achieve target of eggs production throughout life cycle of layer. We were glad to invite Mr Chanchai Chaikittiporn, Poultry Management Specialist to share his wise experience to control ventilation in different type of housing systems. With presentation entitled “Ventilation Management to Improve Pullet & Layer Performance”, he pinpointed common problems in different type of ventilation system with ideal solution to solve the problems. Temperature inside and outside the house, humidity, number of birds per house with different caging system are some of the key factors to determine optimal wind speed in the house.

Respiratory disease control is very important in poultry industry with high density and long rearing period especially in layers. Respiratory infections in layers have significant economic impact on livability, poor eggs production and egg shell quality. Dr Roberto Soares, Ceva Regional Poultry Technical Manager emphasized that multi–factorscould lead to respiratory complex disease. With the accurate diagnosis by observing clinical sign, gross and post mortem lesion together with result of serology and virus identification only can help to solve the problems quickly. In addition, he updated current situation of ND, IB and MG in worldwide with procedure of diagnosis and different kind of methods to prevent the diseases. Vaccine is one of the important factors to prevent diseases. Thanks to new technology, Vectormune® ND and Vectormune® FP-MG aretwo effective vaccines to control ND and MG in the farms.

Dr Jessica Lee, Product and Technical Manager of Ceva Malaysia with her 10 years’ experience in Ceva Malaysia updatedus on the latest Vectormune®ND field results in layer. Vectormune®ND which is insertion of F protein of ND virus into HVT virus providesdeep and strong protection toward ND disease. The field result showed that eggs production and livability were significant improved after injection ofVectormune® ND in day old chick. She also reminded thatVectormune® ND only assist in controlling ND disease while infectious agents, feeding program, management and environment factor could affect laying performance as well. Hence, thorough investigation of all the factors is very important in making correct diagnosis.

This event was wrapped up by Mr Chris Chew by thanking all participants who travel all the way to join the event and actively sharing their experience in field. Without the support of all the participants, this event will not bea successful one. The seminar ended with a memorable group photo taking session and all participants went back with fruitful trip.
