Perfect Pair 2013

Newcastle Disease (ND) and Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) are detrimental to poultry production, particularly broiler production and cause huge impact when outbreaks occur in the farms.

On 28 Feb 2013, we are honoured to have 50 participants from the whole Malaysia gathering at Grand Dorsett Subang Hotel to share field experience and knowledge with our speakers, Professor Dr. Mohd Hair Bejo, Dr. Roberto Soares and Dr. Nitiwat Kaewpoowat on these top concerned diseases.

The seminar started with warm welcoming speech by Dr Amanda Lim, Area Manager of Ceva Animal Health Asia Pacific to all participants in which she introduced that Perfect Pair is the concept that Ceva uses in the new advancement in hatchery vaccination when two products, Transmune IBD and Vectormune® HVT-NDV are combined in one shot solution. She also emphasized that proper vaccination is one of the key points to ensure good flock health performance.

Honourable Professor Dr Mohd Hair Bejo, Dean of Faculty Veterinary Medicine, University Putra Malaysia shared  his experience on ND and IBD and latest updates of these two disastrous diseases. “Currently we are partially in control with these two diseases, although viruses are smart but we are definitely smarter than the viruses. We need to be innovative to control these diseases,” said Professor Hair. He also stressed that routine serology monitoring in the farm is very important to prevent disease outbreak. This is especially true in IBD diagnosis which cannot merely depend on clinical signs and gross lesions. Therefore, further confirmation of diagnosis with virus isolation, detection and subsequent characterisation is very crucial for accurate diagnosis. Professor Hair also enclosed that Variant IBD has never been detected in Malaysia up to today.  Finally, he concluded that Genotype VII and very virulent IBD strains are still the main cause of ND and IBD outbreak in the country.

Dr Nitiwat Kaewpoowat, Regional Marketing Manager of Ceva Animal Health Asia Pacific raised the industrial most debated issue on ‘Bursa size’. In his presentation, his points were congruent with the message from Professor Hair that ‘Bursa Size Does Not Matter’. He concluded that development of bursa depends on many factors such as age, breed, rearing conditions, stress factors and concurrent diseases. Another crucial point is that assessment of bursa size by bursameter alone has no value, unless bursa observation is linked with histopathology, molecular biology, serology and performances to get full assessment of the observed signs.

Dr Roberto Soares, Regional Technical Manager of Ceva Animal Health Asia Pacific further convinced our participants on ‘How Immunocomplex IBD vaccine can improve our flock performance?’ He intensified the point that preventing immunosuppression can lead to successful vaccinations which improve the flock performance. And the secret is none other than Hatchery Vaccination! In his second presentation on ‘Why do we need to consider Vectormune® HVT- NDV in Malaysia?’ is an eye opener to all the participants. He enclosed the advantages of Vectormune® HVT-NDV in giving high protection towards birds against many different genotypes of Newcastle Disease viruses, including the current Genotype VII in Malaysia.  Vectormune® HVT-NDV being a safer, more efficacious, evades maternal antibody and deeper protection is the latest solution towards ND control.

Having both Vectormune® HVT-NDV and Transmune IBD as Perfect Pair in Single Shot Solution, Dr Nitiwat with Ceva’s Cost-Benefit Calculator, showed many evidence of better economic return and greater profitability from broiler producers worldwide. ‘Modern Chickens Need Modern Vaccines’, a thoughtful quote of the day mentioned by him. Coupled with C.H.I.C.K. program as a complete package program of hatchery service, the investment for protection is assured with focus on five areas of operational procedures: Vaccines, Equipment, Vaccination Technique, Audit & Diagnosis and Expertise.

Finally, Dr Tan Joo Tiam, Marketing Development Manager of Ceva Animal Health Malaysia wrapped up this fruitful seminar with thanks to all participants for their time and support in making Perfect Pair seminar a successful kick off of 2013. With latest vaccine technology of ND and IBD in the world, we encourage the use of Perfect Pair in Malaysia to bring more benefit to farmers with better performance.
